Austin Dog Rescue is made up purely of volunteers. Each dog is sheltered within a home in the Austin area. As such, there is no physical shelter to visit the dog at. If you think you may be interested in a particular dog now or in the future, please fill out an application form. People with approved application forms are prioritized over people who haven’t yet applied.
If you are looking for a smart and energetic young buddy, look no further…you found Fezzik!
Fezzik is a quick learner with an instinct to herd anything and anyone. He needs a dedicated human(s) who will provide patience, consistency, and take time to continue his training and teach him about good manners. Fezzik loves people and shows his excitement by jumping on you, (he’s just so excited to see you!), mouthing at your hands (again, so excited to see you!), and mouthing at your ankles when he’s super excited (he wants to herd you and keep you close by!). For these reasons, he would do better in a home without young children.
Fezzik can be fearful of new experiences, but with patience, time, and acclimation he should overcome his fears. As an example: he was terrified of car rides, and in a short period of time he now loves riding and is a perfect passenger. Fezzik is pretty direct with his communication and body language, and will need patient people who will give him the space and time to acclimate to experiences he is uncomfortable with. He would be great candidate for activity training such as agility or nose/scent work, which would give him a confidence boost and keep his mind working.
Fezzik does great as the only dog in the home. With proper introductions, he has done well with the few dogs he has met. However, his herding, vocalness, and uber-excitement can be annoying and too intense for many dogs. He would not be a good participant in open dog park playtime. Fezzik is an active guy who needs regular walks, runs around the yard, playtime, and mental stimulation. He also enjoys his share of quiet snuggle time and likes to have his eyes on the human as much as possible.
Fezzik needs to live in a house with a yard and without shared walls. With the exception of overnight/bedtime, Fezzik does not love being in his crate, even if his people are nearby. He will cry and howl. He would do best in a home with humans who don’t leave him alone for long.
If you are up for a smart, affectionate, energetic, and trainable buddy - put in an application to meet Fezzik!
