Austin Dog Rescue is made up purely of volunteers. Each dog is sheltered within a home in the Austin area. As such, there is no physical shelter to visit the dog at. If you think you may be interested in a particular dog now or in the future, please fill out an application form. People with approved application forms are prioritized over people who haven’t yet applied.

Meet Estelle, Esti, Stell Bell, Estella to her friends. She also answers to "treat", "cookie", and "you wanna?".

We first saw Estelle on a final plea when she made the shelter euthanasia list. She was partially paralyzed, blind, and skinny. We thought we were pulling a hospice dog so writing this bio feels sooooooo good. It has taken a few months, many trips to the vet, two surgeries, a surprise litter of puppies, and some TLC to fix her right up!

Through all of it Estelle has been a trooper. She is a typical shepherd, loves her people as a stalker, follow you from room to room, watch you sleeping kind of way. She is very nosey and inquisitive, and must know at all times what everyone is doing. Estelle LOVES being massaged and if you give her really good butt scratches she will almost fall over.

Food is serious business and if not prepared fast enough she will whine until it is ready. We are working on her leash walking skills and distance. An MRI was done to determine what was causing Estelle’s paralysis when she first arrived. Several of her lower spinal discs are herniated. Because they are all in the same area surgery cannot be done to fix them. The good news is she healed up and can walk, jump, and run with her back legs. She will never be able to play rough with other dogs who could jump on her back and a home with small children is not ideal for the same reason. Estelle likes other dogs and only tried to eat the cat for the first 4 months. Her favorite game with the resident pack is to steal the toy they are playing with. She’s a bit of a brat!

If you are looking for a guard dog she has a loud bark but that is as far as she goes. Estelle loves meeting new people, women, men, children there is no stranger in her world. She will drag you to your neighbor’s house on a walk if she hears them outside.

Her eyes have cleared and she has gained much of her sight with daily drops. Estelle suffers from Pannus and will require eye drops and a pair of cool Rex Specs to protect her eyes from UV rays which cause the blindness. Her improvement means she no longer runs into anything but may not see the treat you dropped.

Estelle is the complete package. She is loving, goofy, loyal, and of course gorgeous. Once you meet her you will fall in love.
